Cabin notes with Oddvar
Back in the 1990s, when the Easter radio shows on Radio Hallingdal were first taking shape, Hallingdal Hytteservice was invited to take part in a program series called "In the Cabin Wall".
For several years, we had great conversations – both entertaining and informative – that contributed to the cabin tourism culture in the valley.
This series of interviews and stories laid the foundation for our blog, In the Cabin Wall. We aim to carry on the tradition – and the value – of sharing useful insights. Relevant for anyone considering becoming a “cabin Hallingdøl”.
We begin with a short excerpt from one of the many tapes from Radio Hallingdal:
Transcribed
In the recording above, we hear Per Egil Kolsrud from Hol Bygdaradio – later known as Radio Hallingdal – in conversation with Oddvar.
– Most of the Easter tourists seem to have arrived in Hallingdal by now. Oddvar, do you have any thoughts on why Easter in Hallingdal is so popular?
Well, that's a good question. The Easter tradition of heading to the mountains has been deeply rooted in Norway for decades. And the reason so many people choose Hallingdal is our incredible mountain landscape.
We’re located right between our two largest cities, Oslo and Bergen, which has often made Hallingdal a natural meeting point. Getting the railway through the valley in the early 1900s definitely helped. And the driving distance between Oslo and Bergen is ideal too. Combine that with how well Hallingdal has developed its tourism offerings, and you’ve got a winning combination.
– As someone who builds cabins yourself – have you seen much activity? It feels like much of Norway has been in a bit of a standstill for years.
Actually, there’s been a huge interest in cabin construction and sales here in Hallingdal. It’s clear this is a highly sought-after area.
The mountains here are unique, and cabin values seem to be rising steadily in the years ahead.
Timeless
We won’t transcribe all the old tapes – but some things are simply timeless. Like the mountains, and the sense of freedom they give us.
Welcome to the mountains!
